I've found a small mammal
We have a lot of small native mammals around! Those that most commonly come into care are bandicoots and rodents such as Melomys. They can be difficult to identify and, to make sure they are not confused with non-native species, it is important that they are examined by an expert.
Bandicoots
- If you find a baby on its own, please pick it up and put it in a cloth in a warm, dark box. Then contact us immediately. Please do not keep it overnight and do not try to feed it. These little babies are very fragile!
- Adults often suffer injuries from cat attack, mowers, whipper snippers or road accidents. Please put the animal in a secure box in a quiet spot, then contact us asap for further advice. You can also bring the animal to a vet.
Rodents
- trapped adult - cover the trap to minimise stress and injuries and contact us immediately
- injured animal - put in secure box on a cloth, and contact us immediately or bring to vet
- babies - these can be tiny and are also very fragile. Please keep them warm and secure, do not try to feed them and contact us immediately.
